The single highest-value habit in fragrance is buying small before buying big. The industry sells 100 ml as the default, but nobody's first contact with a scent should cost three figures. Small volumes exist at every price point; here is the landscape.

Where to buy safely

• Manufacturer samples: free at counters (just ask, see the in-store guide) and bundled with orders at major online retailers.
• Dedicated sample and decant retailers: businesses like MicroPerfumes sell hand-decanted genuine fragrance in small atomizers. Established decant shops with real return policies are a different universe from marketplace randoms.
• Discounter minis: the big discount retailers (see the cost guide) sell official minis and travel sizes cheaply, for example FragranceX.

The math that makes it obvious

A 5 ml decant holds roughly 45 sprays: about nine full wearings, enough to know a scent through a real week. At $15, a wrong guess costs $15. 1. Sample (1 to 2 ml): does it interest me?
2. Decant (5 to 10 ml): do I reach for it for two weeks straight?
3. Smallest sensible bottle: is the per-ml premium of 30 ml worth flexibility, or does usage justify 100 ml?

Climb every rung and you will almost never own a bottle you do not love.
